From 17 to 27 January 2013, the hugely popular World Buskers Festival, New Zealand’s largest outdoor festival, took place in Christchurch. This year, thousands of Cantabrians and visitors came together to celebrate its 20th birthday and to watch thirty great street acts from nine countries entertaining the people on outdoor stages in Hagley Park, the Botanical Gardens and the Re:start City Mall. Over the 10 days, shows ranged from the extremely amusing juggler/unicyclist/fire eater Hilby to Bendy Em, an amazing contortionist, who managed to squeeze herself into a 16” glass box and Le Gateau Chocolat, an opera-loving drag queen. The World Buskers Festival is definitely a must-see if you happen to be in Christchurch around the beginning of the year; there’s something for everyone.
