With a population of just over 300,000, Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. It is an important educational centre, with two universities and many other educational institutions. Christchurch is a spacious, green city, with lots of parks and gardens. The elegant city centre provides visitors with excellent opportunities for shopping, eating out and nightlife. Christchurch is situated between the ski fields of the Southern Alps and the beaches of the South Pacific. It is a great centre for sports, outdoor activities – and for exploring the magnificent South Island.
