Education pathways in New Zealand
This is a basic outline of the education
system in New Zealand.
Most of our students want to study for a Bachelors Degree. To enter a Bachelors programme, you usually need to meet:
- Academic requirements: 13 years of education
- English requirements: An IELTS level of 6 (some courses require a higher IELTS level)
To see if your secondary/high school qualifications meet academic requirements, look here.
If you do not meet the academic requirements, you may need to do a foundation course. For some students, a diploma or certificate course is a better option – we will give you personal advice on this. (If you would like advice before you arrive in New Zealand, e-mail dos@languages.ac.nz)
| We suggest the following programme for students who are serious about university study. |

If you have a strong intermediate level of English and you work hard it will usually take about 6 months to reach the English level you need for university. If your English level is upper intermediate, it will usually take 3-4 months.
For advice on your English level, complete our online test.
