- be decadent at She Chocolat. Take a class at their Chocolate School, go for a ride on the Chocolate Bus, enjoy a meal, soak up some live music or, relax in the Herb & Water Garden or just eat lots of high quality chocolate.

- take a Caterpillar garden tour

- go surfing or ice skating
- try punting on the scenic River Avon
- play pool or table tennis
- visit an art gallery
- listen to a talk about an area of New Zealand life
- make a trip to the theatre to see a play or the weekly improvisation show
- go horse riding
- do some shopping at Northlands, The Palms, Westfield Riccarton malls or the funky “container mall” ReStart City Retail Centre
- go tenpin bowling
- try NZ-made fudge
- play soccer, touch rugby or badminton
- see a movie
- go swimming or climbing
- have fun and get fit at one of the Recreation Centres. Try Jellie Park, Graham Condon or Pioneer Sport and Recreation Centres.

At the weekends, you can visit many popular sightseeing destinations and try more new activities:
- Akaroa (attractive town by the sea, with a chance to see dolphins, seals and penguins)
- Waipara Valley (enjoy a wine tour)
- Quail Island (walk round the whole island)
- Hanmer Springs (hot pools, also bungy-jumping and jet-boating)
- Kaikoura (whale watching)
- Trans-alpine or East Coast train trips
- Queenstown (good for a long weekend)
- The Southern Alps (hiking and sightseeing in the summer, ski-ing and snowboarding in the winter)
